Can Probiotics Make PANDAS Worse???

What if certain probiotic strains could sometimes make PANDAS symptoms worse, exacerbate chronic fatigue syndrome and other autoimmune disorders, and create brain fog, confusion and depression? I’m not talking about just the ones that contain Strep, and I’m not talking about a “die-off” or a Herx Reaction either, where an individual gets worse before they get better.  Sometimes the probiotics themselves may be the problem.

 The two most common types of probiotics come from lactic-acid producing bacteria (LAB’s) and bifidobacteria. Of the LAB’s there are two categories:

 Those that primarily produce L-lactic acid/L-lactate

Those that primarily produce D-lactic acid/D-lactate.

 

 L-Lactate, which is usually predominant in the body, is easily metabolized. For most people D-Lactate is not a problem, either, but in large amounts it may be difficult for those with impaired digestion to break down. This is especially true for those who have difficulty digesting carbohydrates.

 Certain probiotics – especially L. acidophilus – are sometimes taken in huge quantities because they’re considered “safe in any amount.” However, L. acidophilus mainly produces D-lactic acid, and for those who cannot easily break this could create unintended consequences. D-lactic acidosis (or a sub-clinical form of the same) occurs when the body is unable to rid itself of D-lactic acid. Diet – especially a diet rich in carbs if an individual cannot digest them well – is considered by some to be the main factor behind acidosis. As we’ll discuss later on, though, there are studies which indicate probiotic use can also induce this condition.

 Here’s what happens at a cellular level: D-lactate buildup causes cellular metabolism of glucose to switch from an aerobic (oxygen-rich) process to an anaerobic (oxygen-deprived) process. In this oxygen-starved environment cells are unable to produce adequate amounts of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is needed for the “synthesis, degradation and ‘firing’ of neurotransmitter molecules.”)

 Low ATP can affect cognitive function, create feelings of fatigue and impair coordination among other things. More generally, symptoms of D-Lactic acidosis include fatigue, confusion, impaired central nervous system function, impaired coordination, depression, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, anemia, headaches and in extreme cases encephalitis.

 Fatigue and brain fog? Does this sound familiar to you? Is It Really “Die-Off”?

 If you’ve come across the GAPS or SCD protocol before, you already know that re-balancing damaged gut flora can involve some pretty unpleasant experiences.  Tops on that list is the Herxheimer reaction (aka “die off”), which is a term that “was coined to describe what Karl Herxheimer saw when he administrated drugs to patients. The reaction is thought to happen when toxins from dying pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites, candida, etc.) overwhelm the body’s abilities to clear them out.”

 Basically, the idea is that it’s normal for some people to temporarily feel bad when introducing probiotics – the body working hard to clear a lot of junk out all at once! But what if that’s not what’s happening? Acidosis and die-off can have very similar symptoms so they could be easily confused. “Die-off” typically lasts 3-7 days according to some experts, so if it’s lasting longer than that it might be worth considering acidosis or another factor.

 What the Studies Say…

 Unless they’re taking mega doses, it appears that most people with good digestion will be able to clear excess D-lactate. Unfortunately, the individuals most likely to experience side effects from D-lactate are those who are taking probiotics therapeutically for conditions such as:

  • ·         PANDAS
  • ·         Autism
  • ·         ADD
  • ·         Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • ·         Leaky Gut Syndrome
  • ·         Compromised Immune System

 In a recent study 14 people whose invasive infection was attributed to probiotics were immune compromised) Since the side effects can be the same as the original symptoms it’s hard to figure out what’s going on without a lab test, but we do know in general that abnormally high levels of D-lactic acid have been observed in some individuals with chronic fatigue, autism and PANDAS.  According to one study: Coleman and Blass were the first to link to bioenergy metabolism disturbances with ASD [autism spectrum disorder]. They reported lactic acidosis in four children with autism. Later, Laszlo et al.  reported increased serotonin, lactic acid and pyruvate levels in children with autism. Lombard then proposed that mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation defects could cause abnormal brain metabolism in children with autism, leading to lactic acidosis and decreased serum carnitine levels.

 Probiotics & Antibiotics Both Implicated

 Ironically, both probiotics AND antibiotics are implicated in D-lactate acidosis. This study found that invasive infection from probiotic strains is rare but possible, though some actual infection rates may be under-reported due to misdiagnosis as “die-off.” In this study set, a little girl who had been given acidophilus from 4 months to 18 months began exhibiting “nervous shuddering, ticks, and OCD tendencies with greatly increased amounts of flatulence.” Lab tests indicated an overgrowth of L. acidophilus as the possible culprit.

 On the flipside, some D-lactic acid producing bacteria appear to be antibiotic resistant, which means they could survive a course of antibiotics which killed everything else. With the competition eliminated, D-lactate producing bacteria could gain a stronger hold.

 D-Lactate Acidosis and Neurotoxicity

This is simple math, really: Studies indicating probiotic induced acidosis + studies confirming neurotoxicity from D-Lactic acidosis = popular probiotic strains may induce neurotoxicity.

 So Are Probiotics Worth it?

 I imagine some of you are wondering whether it’s worth it to continue taking probiotics. I’m not an expert, but I personally think they’re crucial to PANDAS recovery. The benefits of lactic acid producing bacteria (LAB’s) have been thoroughly documented, and research indicates that trying to eliminate them completely can negatively affect our inner-ecology in different ways. Should we rethink megadoses of L. acidophilus and monitor individuals with compromised digestion for signs of acidosis? I think so, especially in cases where people are working hard to heal and not seeing the results they expect.

 For me, the important thing to understand is that certain species of lactobacillus may be more compatible with our biology than others. PANDAS The Gut & Parasites 

If you have a compromised immune system in any way, shape or form, you DO have a parasite issue. There is no doubt! Studies show this connection clearly.

Parasites are masters at survival, their SOLE purpose in life is to survive, that's it!  They complete their life cycle by changing the neurology of their hosts just enough to ensure survival, but usually they are also smart enough to not kill it, usually.  If they can adapt to their environment, which they can (give them access to a child with a faulty immune system due to a vaccination reaction, heavy metal toxicity and reduced gut flora), they root themselves deeply in your system and continue their life cycle by making you crave the foods that feed them, creating the itchies where it counts for spreading eggs under the nails.

A few doctors to research, who have made waves in the medical community by successfully treating illnesses that result from parasitic infections, are:  Dr. Klinghardt, Dr. Simon Yu and Dr. Fry.  These men are pioneers in this field.  Dr. Klinghardt focuses on Lyme Disease,  and Autism, Dr. Yu has recovered people from major diseases like cancer, CFS and pancreatitis among others and Dr. Fry is a researcher who has even discovered a new malaria-like parasite that is responsible for diseases like MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis and perhaps Autism, among others.

Here is where it gets interesting.  So we think we are doing the right thing by our kids, supplementing their nutritional deficiencies with tons of vitamins and such.  But did we ever stop to think about WHY those deficiencies are there to begin with?  Ok so yes, heavy metals play a role and limited or poor diets too, but why are ALL kids on the spectrum, ADHD and those with  PANDAS/PANS low in B vitamins, particularly B12 and why are ALL kids on the spectrum and with PANDAS/PANS deficient in minerals like zinc and magnesium and why is their beneficial gut flora so depleted....the common denominator is that parasites THRIVE on this stuff.  Every time you put another supplement down your child's throat, consider the possibility that you are FEEDING a parasite.  So, if we are feeding these invaders with our children's cravings, the supplements, what are you left with in the end, continued nutritional deficiencies in your kids (because they don't get much of the nutrients) and a case of parasites, resulting in aunto immune symptoms you can't seem to gain control of. 

Oh, and one last note on yet another common thread here is that it has been documented that the Ascaris worm can and DOES cause gluten-intolerance. 

Compromised Immune System, PANDAS and PARASITES?

PANDAS is an immune system failure with a multitude of triggering agents. I will leave it up to you to decide for yourself what the cause of the immune system failure is…for me I am convinced it was vaccination reaction.   Regardless, because of the compromised immune system, the parasites are a massive problem.  The helminth is a worm.   A helminth houses (provides shelter) for the smaller guys like bacteria (strep), yeast and viruses.  Biofilm protects all of these guys from your immune system.  Medication can't kill off bacteria that has a nice comfy Biofilmed home in your body. Medication cannot dissolve biofilm, but Essential oils can and do.  Studies show that essential oils are very effective at dissolving Biofilm. Not only will the essential oil dissolve the biofilm, but it will surround the parasite and kill it.  One of the big players is the Ascaris Lumbricoides.  Symptoms that have been historically documented by professionals as being associated with this particular parasite are: asthma, eczema, bronchitis, rashes, dilated pupils, hyperactivity among others that affect the GI tract, as well.  The Ascaris releases amphetamines, hence the hyperactivity and dilated eyes, and perhaps very much related to the ADHD, brain fog, motor tics and emotional labiality symptoms frequently seen with PANDAS.

We know that essential oils not only have the ability to repair the gut, but they have the ability to kill and expel parasites from the gut.

PANDAS... Loose Teeth, the Dentist and Mouth Bacteria

With PANDAS, we know that it is important to avoid triggers that can cause a myriad of symptoms.  Did you know that the mouth is full of unhealthy bacteria and something as simple as bleeding gums or even a loose tooth can allow that bacteria to enter the bloodstream causing inflammation in the brain and a symptomatic flare up? This is a BIG problem for PANDAS kids because their immune system in compromised. Until that is corrected you must protect them as much as possible from exposure to toxins, fungus, virus and bacteria.

The bacteria that form plaque and tartar release toxins that stimulate the immune system to overproduce powerful infection-fighting factors called cytokines. Ordinarily, cytokines are important for healing. In excess, however, they can cause inflammation and severe damage. Cytokines of particular importance in periodontal disease are known as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1beta, which are very active in the mouth, and are important in causing destructive inflammation.

·         In addition, white blood cells produced by the immune response to bacteria also release a family of enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which break down connective tissue.  When a child has a loose tooth or when your gums bleed this dangerous bacteria enters the blood stream and cause the immune system to react.

 

Studies suggest that this inflammatory response may have effects not only in the gums but also in organs throughout the body, including the brain.

How to protect your child & family from unhealthy bacteria entering the blood stream.

It is vitally important to address unhealthy oral bacteria especially in kids with PANDAS.  Simply by brushing your teeth twice a day with 1 drop of an essential oil on your toothpaste and toothbrush will kill the unhealthy bacteria in your mouth.  We recommend with PANDAS that you incorporate this step into your daily regimen.  Below is a an article on the dangers of mouth bacteria entering the blood stream from loose teeth and bleeding gums.

The inside of the human body is a bacteria-free zone. Bacteria are certainly within you, but they exist only in areas that have a direct channel to the outside world, such as the mouth, intestines and the surface of the skin. These areas are well protected by a layer of cells (epithilial cells) which form a protective barrier to keep away the nasties of the outside world. That’s why there are healthy stomach bacteria, but no healthy liver bacteria. From a certain point of view your lungs and digestive tract still are the outside world, which is why bacteria can get in and live there, sometimes perfectly happily without causing any trouble at all.

 

Major problems start to happen, however, once bacteria get through that epithelial barrier and into the tissues of your body. Which is why the first bacteria of the new year is the oral bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum, which has a trick to open up little doors in blood vessels. These aren’t massive holes, not big enough to cause bleeding but large enough to let it and other bacteria into the bloodstream.

This is a big issue, because once the bacteria get into the blood-stream they can travel around anywhere within the body. It’s not  just the blood-vessels in the mouth that the F. nucleatum can get into, it can also bypass a lot of other cellular barriers such as the blood-brain barrier that keeps bacteria out of your brain, and the placental barrier that guards the passage of substances between a pregnant mother and the foetus.

 

The bacteria works by releasing a chemical which is picked up by the cells that make up blood vessels (endothelial cells) and causes the cells to become more permeable. More technically the bacterial chemical (a FadA adhesin) binds to a protein on the cells (vascular endothelial cadherin) that helps to keep the endothelial cells joined together and causes it to migrate away from the cell-cell junction. This opens the junctions up slightly and makes the whole vessel more permeable.

 

FadA (the bacterial chemical) is an interesting little molecule, and while it’s highly conserved in F. nucleatum and related oral bacterial species, it has been lost in many closely related species which do not populate the human mouth. This is a protein with one specific purpose – to open blood vessels – and where that function is not needed the bacteria has no need for the protein. When it’s first made by the cell it exists in a form called pre-FabA which anchors to the bacterial membrane with the soluble part (the actual FabA) on the outside of the bacteria ready to be deployed.

 

To test whether the FabA and the cell cadherin could bind, the researchers carried out a whole range of different binding tests (more information in the  reference below). First, they did a yeast-two-hybrid screen, a sort of sciency quick and dirty method to see if two proteins can bind each other. Then they took both proteins out of the cell to see if they could bind separately, by sticking one protein to a column and seeing if it could ‘catch’ the other as it was washed through. Finally they put both proteins back in the cell with coloured markers attached to see if the coloured markers appeared in the same places. All of these results, along with the actual structures of the two proteins, suggest very strongly that they bind.

 

One of the most interesting tests they did was to see whether the F. nucleatum was just opening the floodgates for itself, or whether other bacteria were sneaking in at the same time. They did this by making little wells with endothelial tissue between them. Sure enough, those cultures containing E. coli along with F. nucleatum showed that both bacteria could travel through the endothelium together, whereas in cultures containing only E. coli the bacteria remained on one side of the membrane.

 

The researchers don’t suggest any way to combat this, they’re more interested in the exciting science, but regularly and gently brushing your teeth can’t hurt! (I should point out here that non-gentle brushing of teeth can damage the gums and open blood vessels anyway, making the clever bacterial tricks somewhat redundant)

PANDAS... Things To Avoid

With PANDAS the immune system has malfunctioned and is in a hyper-state, so it is important to avoid toxins that can cause your immune system to overreact and trigger a flare up. Below are some things that will cause problems and must be avoided when focusing on recovery. Make sure you read labels, if its in the product it will be listed.

  • BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) – neurotoxin, potentially causes endocrine disruption, bio-chemical and cellular malformation.  Found in cereals and snack foods.

 

  • BVO (Brominated Vegetable Oil) – Patented as a flame retardant, BVO is banned in Europe and Asia, but not in US.  Builds up in cells, and can cause cognitive regression, memory loss, motor tics, and neurological problems.  Found in soda, drinks, Gatorade, snack foods, commercial bakery items.

 

  • TBHQ – (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone) is in fact a chemical preservative which is a form of butane. Consuming TBHQ can cause increase in ADD/ADHD, brain fog, restlessness, agitation, aggressive behavior. TBHQ is used in many foods, ranging from crackers to crisps to fast foods. It is also found in certain brands of pet foods, as well as in cosmetic and baby skincare products, varnish, lacquers and resins. It is used in the stabilization process of explosive compounds. The risks and side-effects of this preservative product far outweigh the benefit of it being used as a highly unsafe preservative ingredient.

 

  • Artificial Food Dyes (Red # 40, Yellow, Blue & Green) - Unless colorings and dyes are derived from natural ingredients (purple cabbage, beets, turmeric, etc.), the dyes used in foods are most often derived from coal tar or petroleum derivatives. They have been linked to ADHD (blue and yellow #6), hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer (red #3), childhood OCD (yellow #5), chromosomal damage and a wide variety of allergic reactions. Many are banned in other countries, but continue to fill U.S. children’s foods. Dr. Johnathan Brostoff (Food Allergy and Intolerance) theorized that food dyes inhibit an enzyme known to detoxify certain intestinal bacteria, making children vulnerable to hyperactivity as a result

 

  • High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)- Made from genetically modified corn processed with enzymes, caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, HFCS has been shown to contain mercury — a very potent neurotoxin that, even in tiny concentrations, can cause neurological damage in children.

 

  • Aspartate or Aspartame- Aspartame breaks down to potent neurotoxins, including formaldehyde, methanol, and formic acid. Dr. Russell Blaylock considers aspartame an “excitotoxin” that over stimulates neurons to death, contributing to many neurological problems — from memory loss and inability to concentrate to Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. Consistent ingestion causes chronic methanol poisoning, changing dopamine levels in the brain and leading to depression, anxiety disorder and autoimmune conditions. Aspartame also increases phenylalanine levels which can provoke seizures and are correlated with schizophrenia. Foods that contain Aspertame are, Diet sodas, Yogurts, Chewing gum, Cooking sauces, Crisps, sweeteners, Drink powders, Flavored water, Sugar-free products, Breakfast Cereals.  Low Sugar is healthier then sugar free!

 

  • ·        Monosodium Glutamate or Glutamic Acid (MSG) - MSG is a nervous system stimulant that causes us to respond more intensely to food flavors. Originally derived from seaweed, MSG is now made by fermenting rice, corn or potatoes. MSG continues to be added to a variety of packaged foods (see food additives tab). It has been linked to learning disabilities, migraine headaches, anxiety, depression, seizures, obesity, diabetes and endocrine disorders. Dr. Russell Blaylock believes that aspartame and MSG are behind the rise in ADD and ADHD among children.

 

  • ·        Nitrates and Nitrites - Are curing agents used to preserve meat and inhibit bacterial growth. Found in bacon, hot dogs, cold cuts and preserved meats. They have been shown to be powerful carcinogens and to contribute to colorectal, stomach and pancreatic cancer, chronic  obstructive pulmonary disease, DNA mutations, neurotransmitter damage and brain tumors in children.
     
    It is also imperitive to avoid Flouride with our children.  Flouride is a Neuro-toxin, that will flare PANDAS symptoms in most children.  

    Mant sudies show that ingesting fluoride has no beneficial effect on your teeth. In fact, there's overwhelming evidence indicating that fluoride is a potent toxin that can cause a wide array of severe health problems once ingested.

    When evaluating the issue of water fluoridation it is also important to understand that fluoride is a drug. You can't get fluoride without a prescription. Yet it's being added to your water supply on a mandatory basis at various levels that may or may not be safe for various individuals, especially children, the sick, and the elderly. Water fluoridation is a major assault on your freedom of choice – to be drugged or not.

    Sodium fluoride, which is a far simpler toxin than the fluoride compounds used for most water fluoridation, has also been used for rat and cockroach poisons, so there is no question that it is highly toxic.

    Amazingly, the United States is only one of eight countries in the entire developed world that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its water supply. (The other seven are: Australia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore.) In Europe, Ireland is the only country that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its drinking water, and England fluoridates 10 percent. Most of mainland Europe is not fluoridated, and yet, according to World Health Organization data, their teeth are just as good, if not better than Americans'.

    Studies Link Water Fluoridation to Reduced IQ in Children

    The latest study linking water fluoridation to lowered IQ was announced in a December 21 news release. However, this study was recently withdrawn from publication according to Jane Schroeder (NIH/NIEHS). In an email response she explained the reason for the withdrawal as follows:

    "Following Ahead of Print publication EHP learned that many of the data had been published in a previous paper (Xiang et al. 2003. Effect of fluoride in drinking water on children's intelligence. Fluoride 36: 84-94), in violation of EHP¹s policy regarding the use of previously published material in original Research Articles. Consequently, the paper had to be withdrawn from publication."

    That said, the data published in 2003 still stands and is still valid. Dr. Connett has also stated that his comments still stand.

    According to Paul Connett, director of the Fluoride Action Network:

    "This is the 24th study that has found this association, but this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children's blood.

    This brings us closer to a cause and effect relationship between fluoride exposure and brain damage in children.

    What is also striking is that the levels of the fluoride in the community where the lowered IQs were recorded were lower than the EPA's so-called 'safe' drinking water standard for fluoride of 4 ppm and far too close for comfort to the levels used in artificial fluoridation programs (0.7 – 1.2 ppm)." 

    Trained as a chemist specializing in environmental chemistry, Dr. Connett is known throughout the world as a leader in the movement opposing water fluoridation because of his knowledge base. His organization, the Fluoride Action Network, contains a wealth of information on this topic.

    Earlier this year I joined forces with Connett to publicize his game plan to end water fluoridation in Canada and the United States. I'll review it again at the end of this article.

    In December 2010, a second study reporting an association with exposure to fluoride and lowered IQ in children was pre-published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials.  

    According to the authors, “our study suggested that low levels of fluoride exposure in drinking water had negative effects on children’s intelligence and dental health and confirmed the dose–response relationships between urine fluoride and IQ scores as well as dental fluorosis.”

    This study indicates a 5 point lowering in IQ as the fluoride level in drinking water went from about 0.3 ppm to 3.0 ppm. 

    Fluoride has Been Repeatedly Linked to Brain Damage

    In addition to this study, there are 23 more from four different countries (Mexico, Iran, India and China), which indicate that even moderate exposure to fluoride lowers IQ in children.

    According to Dr. Connett, there are also more than 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage, spanning all the way back to 1941. Unfortunately, most of the IQ studies have been unavailable in English, which is why the 2006 fluoride report created by the National Research Council of the National Academies contained only five of the available studies.

    Still, while reviewing just 20 percent of the evidence, the panel concluded that there was a consistent and plausible link between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ. The news release quotes Tara Blank, Ph.D., the Science and Health Officer for the Fluoride Action Network as saying:

     "Millions of American children are being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin on a daily basis. Who in their right mind would risk lowering their child's intelligence in order to reduce a small amount of tooth decay, for which the evidence is very weak."
